When replacement may be right
- Many slates are flaking, soft, or turning to powder
- Slates keep slipping even after repairs

- The wood under the roof is soft or rotting in many places
How a slate reroof works
- 1We check the roof and tell you if repair or replacement makes more sense.
- 2We remove the old roof down to the wood. A new roof cannot go on top of slate.
- 3We fix any bad wood and add new underlayment.
- 4We install new slate with copper or stainless nails and new flashing.
No layering over slate
Building code, and Doylestown Borough rules, do not allow a new roof to be put on top of slate. The old slate must come off first.
Natural slate
Natural slate is heavy and lasts a very long time when put on right. It takes more money up front.
Synthetic slate
Synthetic slate is lighter and takes less money. It looks like slate from the street. In a historic district, ask first if it is allowed.
